About The Department
The Department of Sociology was established in 2022/2023 academic session with the new Faculty of Management Sciences and Social Sciences. The Philosophy of the Programme remains close to the very humanistic concerns that played a critical role in the development of Sociology as a scientific and an academic discipline.
More specifically, the programme is designed to enable students gain a thorough grasp of sociological theories and methods; develop and sharpen their critical judgement as well as their observational, analytical and interpretative skills; and develop in them an ability to relate theory to practice with particular reference to developing societies in general and to Nigeria in particular.
The programme is streamline in accordance with the NUC Approved Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) for the Nigerian University System. The undergraduate course in sociology at the Northwest University Sokoto is unique and very innovative in several respects.
Beyond the ’core’ conventional courses, there are innovative courses that deals with the sociology of mass communication, sociology of health and illness behavior, and Economy and Society in the Sokoto Caliphate etc. which try to expose students to issues and realities around them or which they will, in all probability, encounter in their future endeavors.
