About The Department
The Department of Special Education, Faculty of Education, Northwest University, Sokoto, was established in 2022 as one of the University’s pioneering academic units, in line with its mission to promote inclusive, innovative, and globally relevant education. The Department offers the B.Ed. Special Needs Education programme, designed to respond to the growing demand for qualified professionals capable of supporting learners with diverse educational needs.
The Department is committed to advancing inclusive education, equity, and accessibility through high-quality teaching, research, and community engagement. Its curriculum is aligned with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Benchmark Minimum Academic Standards and global best practices in special and inclusive education. Students are trained in areas such as curriculum adaptation, individualized education programmes, assessment and diagnosis, sign language, braille, assistive technologies, and inclusive classroom practices.
With a team of experienced academic and non-academic staff, the Department provides a supportive learning environment that equips students with the knowledge, skills, and professional attitudes required to serve effectively in special schools, inclusive settings, rehabilitation centres, policy institutions, and related agencies. Graduates of the programme are prepared to become competent educators, advocates, and leaders who promote the rights and full participation of persons with disabilities in society.

On behalf of the academic and non-academic staff of the Department of Special Education, I warmly welcome you to the B.Ed. Special Needs Education programme at Northwest University, Sokoto.
The Department is dedicated to the training of competent, compassionate, and innovative educators who possess the knowledge, skills, and attitudes required to address the diverse learning needs of individuals with disabilities and exceptionalities. Our programmes are carefully structured to promote inclusivity, equity, and quality education, in line with national education policies and global priorities for inclusive education.
This handbook has been developed to serve as a comprehensive guide for students throughout their academic journey, from admission to graduation. It provides essential information on our philosophy, objectives, programme structure, academic regulations, and code of conduct. I strongly encourage all students to study it carefully and adhere strictly to the standards and guidelines it contains.
