About The Program

The Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Psychology programme provides students with a broad and scientific understanding of human behaviour and mental processes. The programme is designed in line with the National Universities Commission (NUC) Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS) to ensure academic quality and relevance.

The curriculum introduces students to core areas of psychology, including clinical, social, developmental, cognitive, health, and industrial/organizational psychology, while also developing skills in research methods, statistics, and ethical practice. Through classroom instruction, practical exposure, and guided research, students are prepared for professional roles, further academic pursuits, and responsible participation in society.

The philosophy underlying the B.Sc. Psychology programme is to produce a generation of graduates equipped with the appropriate knowledge and skills to contribute meaningfully to the development of Nigeria, Africa, and the global community. This is achieved through exposure to a broad foundation of knowledge in the social sciences in general, and in the various subfields of Psychology in particular.

The vision of the programme B.Sc. Psychology is to develop individuals with strong intellectual and moral values through effective teaching, learning, and research, with the ultimate goal of contributing to local and international development and success.

The mission of the Department of Psychology is to uphold a tradition of excellence in scholarship, teaching, research, and community service. The Department is committed to creating and disseminating practical knowledge that benefits not only the University community but also Nigeria and the global society.

The aim of the B.Sc. Psychology programme is to produce graduates with sound scientific knowledge and practical skills in psychology who can understand, explain, predict, and influence human behaviour for individual, organizational, and societal development.

The objectives of the Psychology undergraduate degree programme are to:

  1. Professional Identity & Ethical Awareness: Foster enthusiasm for psychology as a profession and promote principles that enhance psychological well-being.

  2. Foundational Knowledge & Practical Skills: Provide broad training in psychological theories and research methods, including observation, experimentation, and data analysis.

  3. Application to Real-World Problems: Develop the ability to apply psychological principles to behavioral, social, health, and organizational challenges.

  4. Transferable & Multidisciplinary Skills: Equip students with skills relevant to diverse sectors and specialized fields of psychology.

  5. Critical Thinking & Innovation: Promote analytical thinking, creativity, entrepreneurship, and readiness for advanced studies and professional careers.

Employment Skills

Graduates of the programme will acquire skills relevant to employment in various sectors, including:

  1. Behavioural analysis and human relations

  2. Research and data collection skills

  3. Counselling and interpersonal communication

  4. Problem-solving and critical thinking

  5. Teamwork, leadership, and organizational skills

For a four-year course:

 In addition to UTME score the candidate should possess a Senior School Certificate with at least five credit passes, including Math, English and Biology at not more than two sittings.

For the three-year programme:

 Candidates shall possess five SSC credits passes two of which must be at Advanced Level. For emphasis, English, Mathematics, and any of the following: Biology, Health Science, Agricultural Science, Animal Husbandry and Economics are required at credit passes. Candidates with ND, NCE, Nursing and Midwifery are also qualified.

Upon completion of the programme, graduates should be able to:

  1. Demonstrate a broad understanding of core concepts, theories, and methods in psychology.

  2. Apply psychological principles to analyze individual and group behaviour in diverse contexts.

  3. Use appropriate research methods and basic statistical tools in psychological investigations.

  4. Communicate psychological ideas and findings clearly in written and oral forms.

  5. Demonstrate ethical awareness and professionalism in psychological practice and research.

  3. Strong foundation for postgraduate studies and professional certification

To obtain B.Sc. in Psychology, the candidate must satisfy the requirements spelt out below:

  1. Completed and passed all the courses he/she registered for, including all compulsory courses and required as may be prescribed by the University/Faculty;
  2. Obtained a minimum CGPA specified by the University but not less than 1.0, and
  3. Earned the minimum credit units of not less than 120 for a four-year programme and 90 for a three-year programme. In addition, must met other requirements that may be prescribed by the department, faculty, or the senate of Northwest University Sokoto.
