About The Program

The Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology at Northwest University, Sokoto, is offered by the Department of Sociology, which is part of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. This program focuses on the study of human behavior within group settings, exploring how individuals interact with each other and their environment. Sociology examines the relationships between people, their surroundings, and the elements that shape these interactions. The knowledge gained from sociology is essential for understanding and improving the quality of human life. It provides insights into human behavior and social structures, helping to address societal challenges and foster better living conditions. The program includes a variety of courses that cover different aspects of sociology, such as: history of sociological thought, Social Psychology, Social Anthropology, Sociology of Crime and Delinquency, Political Sociology, Rural Sociology, Sociology of Law, Industrial Sociology, Sociology of Religion, Sociology of Development, Sociology of Medicine, Sociology of Education, Gender and Society, Sociology of Complex Organizations, and Sociology of the Family.

The courses in the Bachelor of Science in Sociology program are designed to help students gain both theoretical knowledge and practical skills that are highly valued by employers in both public and private sectors, both in Nigeria and abroad. All courses are taught by qualified staff, including Assistant Lecturers, Lecturer I, Lecturer II, Senior Lecturers, and Professors. At the start of each semester, students receive a course outline along with a list of recommended readings and references for each subject. The relationship between students and faculty is excellent; lecturers are approachable and eager to help students with their questions and concerns. It is mandatory for all lecturers to maintain office hours, during which students can discuss any issues they may have.

The philosophy underlying the B.Sc. Sociology program is to produce a crop of graduates equipped with appropriate knowledge and skills to make their contribution to the development of Nigeria, Africa and the global community, having been exposed to a broad foundation of knowledge in a discipline in the social sciences in general and in the various sub-fields of Sociology in particular.

The vision of the Department of Sociology is to develop individuals with strong intellectual and moral values through teaching, learning, and research. The goal is to contribute to both local and international development and success.

The mission of the Department of Sociology is to uphold a tradition of excellence in scholarship, teaching, research, and community service. The department is dedicated to creating and sharing practical knowledge that benefits not only the university community but also Nigeria as a whole.

The aim of the B.Sc. Sociology programme is to produce graduates with a sound understanding of social structures, institutions, and human behavior, equipped with analytical, research, and problem-solving skills necessary for addressing social issues and contributing to sustainable national development.

The major objectives of a degree in Sociology are to:

  1. Instill in students a sound knowledge of Sociology, an appreciation of its application in different socio-cultural contexts and to involve the students in an intellectually stimulating and satisfying experience of learning and studying the workings of society;
  2. Provide students with broad and well-balanced knowledge of sociological theories and methods, to improve students’ analytical ability as well as objective and critical judgement;
  3. Cultivate in students the ability to apply their sociological knowledge and skills to the understanding and solution of societal problems in Nigeria and elsewhere;
  4. Provide students with relevant knowledge and skill base from which they can proceed to further studies in special areas of Sociology or multi-disciplinary areas involving Sociology;
  5. To develop students understanding of self, interests and abilities for proper adjustment to life challenges thereby engendering high quality mental health;
  6. Instill in students an appreciation of the importance of Sociology in socio-cultural, legal, economic, political, religious, industrial and environmental contexts.
  7. Develop in students a range of useful competencies for public, private or self-employment; and
  8. Producing graduates who have potential for re-engineering social order for improved personal and social life.

Employment Skills

Graduates of the B.Sc. Sociology programme will acquire skills relevant to employment in both public and private sectors, including:

  1. Social research and data analysis skills.

  2. Policy analysis and programme evaluation skills.

  3. Community development and social intervention skills.

  4. Interpersonal communication and teamwork skills.

  5. Problem-solving and critical thinking abilities.

UTME: In addition to UTME score, candidates must have obtained five credit passes in Senior Secondary Certificate to include Mathematics and English Language plus either Economics, Geography or Government and other two subjects at not more than two sittings.

Direct Entry (DE): Candidates for DE admission shall possess five credits in the SSCE, NECO, GCE, or it equivalent of which at least two shall be at advanced level, or four credit passes of which shall be at advanced level provided that such pass is not counted at both levels of the examinations. For emphasis, credit must be obtained in English Language, Mathematics, Geography, Government or Civic Education. Diploma holders must have a minimum of a lower credit or merit passes in relevant courses

To obtain a B.Sc. in Sociology, the candidates are required to pass all core courses with a minimum of 120 credit units for students admitted through UTME or 90 credit units for students admitted through Direct Entry. In addition, must met other requirements that may be prescribed by the department, faculty, or the senate of Northwest University Sokoto.
