About The Department

Library and Information Science Department was established in 2022/2023 academic session. The department offers degree programme in Library and Information Science.

The programme equips students with the knowledge and practical skills required to design and implement effective intervention programmes tailored to the diverse library users. Courses also emphasize principles of teaching and classroom management specific to Library and Information Science settings, enabling students to create supportive, inclusive, and well-organised learning environments.

Furthermore, the curriculum integrates the principles of good character, ethics, and sportsmanship, with the aim of fostering well-rounded educators who demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and respect for diversity.

To provide quality education, research, and professional service through:

  1. training of competent librarians and information managers grounded in modern information practices;
  2. integration of ICT and digital technologies in information organization, retrieval, and management;
  3. promotion of lifelong learning, research support, and knowledge preservation; and
  4. contribution to national development through efficient information services in academic, public, and special libraries

Welcome to the Department of Library and Information Science, Northwest University, Sokoto.

It is with great pleasure and a strong sense of responsibility that I present the Department to our students, staff, and stakeholders. The Department is dedicated to the delivery of quality teaching, learning, and research in accordance with the standards and guidelines of the National Universities Commission (NUC).

Our programmes are carefully designed to provide students with the academic knowledge, practical skills, and ethical grounding required to function effectively in modern library and information environments. In today’s knowledge-driven society, information professionals play a vital role in supporting education, research, innovation, and national development. The Department is therefore committed to producing graduates who are adaptable, innovative, and responsive to the dynamic information needs of society.
